It’s a tough question to answer. The number of websites online has grown exponentially, and the internet is now home to many billion-dollar companies. Here are the top 10 most valuable website domains in history.

The “godaddy” is a website that sells domains. The top selling website domain names of all time are godaddy, amazon, and ebay.

It’s possible to make a lot of money selling domain names. While we’re unlikely to see the prices that some of the first top-selling domain names commanded, there are plenty of lessons that current domain investors and website builders can learn from in order to choose the finest domain names now.

What are the most popular domain names of all time? What contemporary lessons can we take away from them?

Looking further into this list reveals a wide range of domain names and themes, but there are some patterns worth noting.

Let’s get started!

The average age of the domain is 25.5 years old.

Depositphotos_219458736_m-2015

We looked at the amount of years that these domains have been active, or their domain age. The following are some high-level statistics:

  1. The average age of the participants was 25.5 years.
  2. The minimum age requirement was 20 years old.
  3. The oldest person was 31 years old.

This demonstrates the significance of domain age in determining the value of a domain. However, we’d be negligent if we didn’t mention an apparent fact: many of the most well-known names, search keywords, and acronyms would have been among the first domains acquired as the Internet grew in popularity.

Does this imply that age is irrelevant? Obviously not.

In the viewpoint of search engines, the age of a domain is significant. A domain that has been visited for years, if not decades, develops brand awareness and authority that a new site just does not.

These names are noteworthy not just because of their antiquity, but also because of their rarity. Branding and subject matter are also important considerations. A 30-year-old domain name with a random collection of letters isn’t worth the big sums they bring in.

TLD Distribution:.COM domains account for 100% of all domains.

Depositphotos_251785976_s-2019

It should come as no surprise that this is the case. Despite the enthusiasm with which many “domaineers” have greeted the new TLD extensions over the last decade,.com domains continue to be the most popular. This is due to a variety of factors.

1. The Internationally Recognized Standard

The most common top-level domain (TLD) in the world is.com. As of April 2021,.com websites accounted up 52.3 percent of all websites on the internet, according to Statista. The.com domain was the first widely used top-level domain, and it has long since established the industry standard.

If you’re selling a domain name, keep in mind that country-specific TLDs like.ru,.in, and.uk need a person to be physically present in those countries to register it.

2. Reputation

A.com company seems to be professional. That’s the anticipated extension, and it’s quite normal for what people want in an internet domain name. When a website is constructed on a.net,.info, or country-specific TLD, it simply does not carry the same weight.

Most people seeking for information online, including buyers, prefer to view a.com. Because of this,.com is more valuable than the other TLD possibilities.

In the opening line, SEO.com declares unequivocally that when a TLD name is available, they always recommend.com.

Breakdown of Parked vs. Businesses on Domains

Depositphotos_32783525_m-2015

Twenty of the top domains all go to a commercial website. FB.com, for example, redirects to Facebook.com. Zappos.com redirects from Clothes.com. Toys.com will take you to ToysRUs.com.

Surprisingly. IG.com does not redirect to Instagram, despite the fact that it is owned by Instagram. It’s possible that the IG.com sellers aren’t interested and are waiting for a much bigger offer. In the long run, I believe Instagram will buy IG.com.

Within the 25 domains, the remaining five lead to a “parked” or “dead” page. These are most likely domain investors who are waiting for an offer.

The following domains are parked:

  1. Fund.com
  2. We.com
  3. Diamond.com
  4. Beer.com
  5. Korea.com

5 Factors That Influence the Value of a Domain

iStock-1136622849

There are a number of elements that go into determining how valuable a domain name is. Most exceptionally valuable domains match most of these criteria, yet one or two may occasionally enough for the perfect domain name.

Sergey Nazarov / istockphoto contributed to this image.

1. A well-known brand

Depositphotos_85000222_m-2015

Yellow Pages is for Yellow Pages, while Facebook stands for Facebook: both are well-known companies.

While it’s hard to forecast the next great corporation, keeping an eye out for potential acronyms or truncated names that aren’t protected may result in large domain profits. Previously, Facebook was simply two random letters strung together.

A brandable domain name that is simple to spell, remember, and sell increases the likelihood that the name will end up being valuable even if it is not on the top list.

A difficult-to-brand name has less advantages.

2. High Traffic and High Value Topics General Term Domains

Depositphotos_13438440_s-2019

Have you noticed how many of the domain names on the list aren’t associated with significant corporations or brands? They’re on phrases that receive a lot of traffic and issues that have a lot of money behind them.

Wine, beer, health insurance, jewels, and clothing are all broad categories that generate large sums of money. Those domain names would be a key authority signal if someone wanted to be recognized as a major player in an industry, or one of the top ones.

This covers themes like casino.com, which are frequently seen as “seedy.”

Finding a simple domain name that is one or two words, one issue, and symbolizes a large industry is like finding a needle in a haystack and is very valuable.

3. Commercially viable

Depositphotos_150388578_m-2015

A domain name should be simple to advertise. This characteristic is present in every domain on the list above. These are domain names that are easy to remember and sell, whether it’s because of a frequent subject, abbreviation, or short and simple.

This holds true for every domain name: the more valued will be more marketable than the less valuable.

4. The age of the domain name (History)

Depositphotos_190376902_m-2015

Within the domain business, aged domains are a category unto themselves. This is true for the majority of domain names since it implies a history. This might be because the old domain has a strong backlink profile that can help a new site’s SEO efforts.

The longer a domain name has been in use, the more probable it has a history. Keep in mind that not all histories are created equal, depending on the specialty. Domain names with a lengthy history, on the other hand, may lead to something exceptional.

5. New Developments

guy_on_computer_in_coffee_shop

Remember when it was fashionable to add a “e” to the beginning of nouns to make them “online”? Email, ebooks, ebook readers, efiles, and other similar services are available. Many of these domains were doomed to fail. Some, though, did. Imagine owning the domain emoji.com before the phrase became popular.

Trying to predict upcoming trends is a high-risk approach for domains, but if the trend pans out, it may lead to some high-reward circumstances.

A.Com is a top-level domain (TLD).

Depositphotos_225367850_s-2019

While there may be clear winners among the many new TLDs being introduced all the time,.com is not only the most common but also the most valuable. They’re also not losing ground.

TLDs accounted for little under 47% of all domains in the globe in 2017. In 2021, that figure had risen to 51%.

Not only is the.com domain still the industry standard, but it is also gaining stronger and capturing a larger share of the market.

Wrap Up

young_woman_outside_on_laptop

While it’s unrealistic to expect a fresh new domain to generate a multimillion-dollar sale, knowing the lessons taught by the top-selling domains provides useful benchmarks to consider when searching for the next domain name to invest in.

If you follow those guidelines, you’ll have a better chance of finding a diamond rather than a dud.
