Wholesale Club is a subsidiary of Costco, and offers memberships that allow shoppers to buy in bulk for wholesale prices. The company has been criticized for its high membership fees, which are on par with Costco’s regular prices.
The is a sam’s club membership worth it reddit is a question that has been asked many times. Due to the high costs of membership, some people are questioning if they are getting their money’s worth.
Since 2014, when my boyfriend (now husband) was kind enough to add me as the second person on his account, I’ve been a Costco member. We’ve handed out the $60 Costco membership without hesitation every year since.
But, whether you buy at Sam’s, Costco, BJ’s, or another wholesale club, it’s reasonable to wonder, “Does a wholesale club membership save me money?” After all, $60 is a significant sum of money, and I need to buy carefully in order to recoup my investment.
The good news is that wholesale club memberships are worthwhile if you can recoup your membership fees. In many instances, the bulk grocery costs alone are enough to cover the membership fee, but I also save a lot of money on:
- Gas
- Tires
- Electronics
- Vacations
It all depends on how frequently and what you purchase at your wholesale club. After all, it’s obviously a waste of money if you spend $60 and then never buy at Costco again. But, hey, we’re all different! Let’s take a closer look at how wholesale club memberships operate and whether or not they’re a good bargain.

What Are Wholesale Club Memberships and How Do They Work?
First and foremost, it is necessary to comprehend why millions of individuals purchase wholesale club memberships. Most retail shops, such as Walmart or Target, have markups ranging from 25 to 50 percent.
However, warehouse shops only mark up their costs by approximately 14%, making their goods typically cheaper than those found in retail stores. Warehouse shops may offer cheaper prices because of membership fees, which enable them recover the expense of charging much less than their rivals.
Of course, you’ll need to shop at your preferred warehouse club often enough to offset the membership fees:
- Sam’s Club costs between $45 and $100 each year.
- BJ’s charges between $10 and $110 each year.
- Costco membership ranges from $55 to $120 per year.
You may shop without a full membership if you don’t want to pay for an annual membership. Non-members pay a ten percent service fee at Sam’s Club, a twenty percent cost at BJ’s, and a small five percent fee at Costco.
As a non-member, though, you won’t have access to all of the club’s deals: wholesale businesses offer members special prices in return for their loyalty.
So, if you don’t want to pay a high membership cost, you may choose for a service charge instead. However, if you plan to buy at a wholesale club at least once a month, I believe it is worthwhile.

The Benefits of Purchasing a Wholesale Membership
What is it about wholesale club memberships that makes them so appealing? For decades, frugal shoppers have been devoted members of Costco and Sam’s Club, and these six benefits definitely make it a tempting choice.
1. Price reductions
That’s true: if you purchase the proper items from a wholesale shop, you can save a lot of money. It’s very uncommon to find a 20% discount on goods like rice, pasta, or frozen meals that you’d usually purchase at the grocery store.
Warehouse shops like BJ’s, Costco, and Sam’s are able to pass on larger discounts to you since you’re purchasing in quantity. A wholesale club membership would certainly save you money as long as you have a way to store 20 pounds of rice.
2. Store brands of higher quality
Many of Costco’s Kirkland brand goods were equally as excellent (if not better) than name-brand ones, according to Consumer Reports. I like to stock up on Kirkland brand medication, chocolate, and Kleenex that are just as wonderful as the “real thing.” In the case of wholesale clubs, off-brand is a great bargain that doesn’t typically mean sacrificing quality.
3. Shopping is less frequent.
Are you tired of going shopping every week? Once a month, I travel to Costco to fill up on cups, plates, toilet paper, flour, and other necessities. What I purchase at Costco varies from month to month depending on what we need, but it has significantly reduced my visits to the grocery shop.
Less frequent shopping is also good for my budget since I’m tempted to purchase a lot of odd items every time I go food shopping.
4. Excellent return policy and customer service
If you encounter a problem while shopping at Walmart, you’re out of luck. If you pay for a wholesale club membership, however, you will get excellent customer support. I’ve always had good experiences with my warehouse club, whether over the phone or in person.
And what if you need to send anything back? You can return almost anything, man. Costco and Sam’s Club provide a 100% money-back guarantee, allowing you to return any item (excluding electronics) at any time for any reason, as long as you have the receipt.
For instance, I once purchased a large package of strawberries from Costco. When I arrived home, I discovered that a third of the berries had gone bad. When I returned to Costco, they gave me a full refund for the strawberries.
5. Low-cost dinners
In the early years of our relationship, my husband and I went on a lot of inexpensive Costco food court dates. One of Costco’s most renowned loss leaders is their $1.50 hot dog and drink combination.
Wholesale clubs, however, offer some dirt-cheap meals in their cafeterias, regardless of where you buy. I suggest eating before going shopping so you don’t make choices while you’re hungry. However, a $3 burger, $1 bottled water, and other inexpensive delights are hard to match. It’s mainly greasy fast food, but if you’re looking to eat cheaply, these cafeteria meals are a great way to recoup your membership costs.
P.S. If you want to fill your gullet with complimentary food, go to your wholesale club on a weekend and taste all they have to offer.
6. Extra services
The final major benefit of joining a wholesale club is the additional services available to you as a member. Wholesale clubs negotiate with other suppliers on your behalf and pass on significant savings to you.
A wholesale club can help you purchase a garage door, a vacation package, and even insurance. When I booked a trip via Costco Travel, I saved $200, more than covering our $60 membership cost.
Just make sure you’re aware of the advantages of your membership! Only a small percentage of members take use of these benefits, yet they may more than make up for your membership costs.
